Of all the many promises for those who will abide in the new heavens and new earth, there are none better than this: “God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God” (Revelation 21:3). All the other beautiful hopes for our future happiness flow out of God’s presence. This is literally true, for one passage tells us that the “river of the water of life” that sustains the tree of life flows directly “from the throne of God and the Lamb.” Even the light of the sun is unnecessary because God is present as a far superior light. At the end of the Bible we come back to the hope that drives the entire story of scripture, that people could dwell with God again like in Eden. Actually this new reality is even better than Eden for God’s people will have experienced evil and will want nothing to do with the tears of this passing age. The hope of God being present in accessible light and brilliance should be the highest Hope of believers, for that is what we need most. Light becomes dim, water can be polluted, and life turns to death where God is not worshipped with all heart, soul, and mind. So yes, be excited now about the New Heavens and New Earth. But let us do so knowing that what we need most, God’s presence with us, is available now, though in veiled fashion. Let’s not wait for paradise, family, for a little taste of heaven. By all means, through ongoing focus on the scriptures, fellowship with God’s people, prayers and many other means of God’s kindness let’s enjoy a foretaste of the glorious greatness of God.
