Most people that know anything about the book of Revelation, have some familiarity with the main characters found in Revelation 13. The first beast out of the sea is none other than the famous and ultimate “antichrist” (there are others, see 1 John 2:18). The second beast is a lesser power that points to the beast whose famous number is “666” representing defiance against God’s perfection (represented by the oft used number 7). Though many will come in a long line of those that hate Christ along with all of the children born of the great mother from Revelation 12, none will do more damage than this first beast. Sadly, this beast is “given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them” (Revelation 13:7). It is easy to get bogged down in the details of forecasting when this person might rise, or what sort of devices and means will be used to harness such incredible power. What is most important to consider is that we still live in a world where evil, no, incredibly powerful wickedness persists and will get worse. No one that takes Revelation 13 seriously can make an easy home out of this world while such a great disturbance awaits. At the same time, though we are not at ease here in a world where such a villain can gain incredible power, that doesn’t mean we cannot still delight on this Christmas Eve that there is a greater Ruler still. For the lyrics that Jesus came to “save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray” are more comforting when we read of this great Antichrist. The beast doesn’t have to hold sway over us, and if we stay true to Christ His victory will be ours even if we join Him in unjust and untimely death at the hand of a monster.
